1. William McKinley moved into the Caribbean with the Spanish American War.
2. McKinley also moved into Asia with the start of the Philippine-American War.
3. Theodore Roosevelt announced the Roosevelt Corollary, which allowed the United States to intervene in the Caribbean.
4. Roosevelt also encouraged the independence of Panama in order to build and retain control of the Panama Canal.
5. William Howard Taft used dollar diplomacy  government action to encourage private American investments in Latin America, promote development and stability, and earn profits for American bankers.
6. Taft also sent troops into Nicaragua to aid a revolution fomented by an American mining company.
7. Woodrow Wilson was moralistic and intervened in a wide variety of places including Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Mexico.

1. Some of those wanting intervention favored Cuban independence,
2. Others had economic assets in Cuba that they thought the revolution threatened.
3. Still others wanted control over Cuba to increase the United States' involvement in the Caribbean.
4. The United States won in large part due to the Cuban rebels who had been fighting the Spanish for years.
5. Another factor in their victory was the antiquated military of the Spanish.
6. Finally, the United States won because of their naval strength and the role of the U.S. 10th Negro Cavalry in capturing San Juan Hill.
