 Symptoms usually appear and peak around age 2-4
 Improvement can be seen in social and communication areas, with most improvements seen early in development
 Some children show major rapid improvements in both areas (bloomers)
 15-30 show regression; lose previously acquired skills either abruptly or more gradually; some lose skills in adolescence due to seizures
 Children with ASD continue to have significant difficulties in both areas and have more need for ongoing support than children with intellectual developmental disabilities
