The common sample size, n, needed to estimate the difference between two population proportions to within a margin of error E with a confidence level of 1 - α can be found as follows:  in the expression

E = zα/2
replace n1 and n2 by n (assuming both samples have the same size) and replace each of p1 and p2 by 0.5 (assuming their values are not known). Then solve for n.

Suppose that you want to estimate the difference between the proportions of  men and women who plan to vote in the next presidential election.  Obtain a common sample size that will ensure a margin of error of at most 0.03 for a 99% confidence interval
