Freud called dreams "the royal road to the unconscious" because
◦ he believed they kept people from uncovering their true feelings.
◦ he believed people intentionally dreamed about material they wanted to discuss in therapy but were afraid to.
◦ he believed defenses were lowered during sleep and repressed material would start to come out in dreams.
