Answer to Question 1

Neuroimaging studies map out brain circuitry and function that are altered in the context of mood disorders. These studies, in turn, help shape our understanding of how environmental and sociocultural factors influence the course of mood disorders. All this information is being synthesized to develop new interventions and strategies for treating and managing mood disorders.

Answer to Question 2

CID is a strategy that brings together people who have been exposed to a common trauma: in this case, suicide of a peer. The CID process involves members of the group discussing their reactions and feelings about the incident. It allows for ventilation of emotions, identification of peers-at-risk, and the dissemination of information and resources. Youth are at particular risk following these incidents given elements of our culture such as suicide pacts, portrayal of victims as heroes, suicide clusters, and how-to suicide internet sites and suicide-encouraging support groups.
