Answer to Question 1

As many as 80 of new mothers develop the baby blues within a few days of childbirth. However, some women later develop more serious symptoms of depression, termed postpartum depression. The prevalence of depression with onset in the first 6 months postpartum ranges from 6.5 to 12.9 across studies, peaking at 2 and 6 months after delivery. This disorder not only affects the mother; it also has ramifications for the social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral development of the child. Early intervention has been shown to reduce the risk of developing postpartum depression, and of lessening the severity of symptoms when it does occur.
