Answer to Question 1

Depression affects approximately 45 of people with schizophrenia and about 5 commit suicide. Suicide rates are much higher during the initial onset of the disorder and immediately before or after any inpatient hospitalization. Approximately 47 have comorbid anxiety disorders; posttraumatic stress disorder occurs in 43 of patient samples. This may be the result of victimization or violence due to impoverished living conditions. Substance abuse occurs among 50 of persons diagnosed as schizophrenic and compounds impairment in daily functioning. Patients who are comorbid for substance abuse are more likely to be homeless, to relapse and be rehospitalized, and to be non-compliant with treatment.
