Answer to Question 1

It is important to consider a person's surrounding context when making a personality disorder diagnosis because a clinician may attribute a behavior to a personality disorder when the behavior can better be explained by an Axis I disorder. For example, a patient may have suicidal ideation, self-harming behaviors, feelings of emptiness, and low self-esteem. These symptoms can be attributed to borderline personality disorder as well as major depressive disorder. Therefore, it may be necessary to wait for symptoms to remit before making a diagnosis if there is no eminent threat to the safety of the patient or others.

Answer to Question 2

FALSE
