Determine the open intervals on the x-axis on which the function is increasing and those on which it is decreasing.
◦ decreasing on (-1, 0)  and (2, ∞), and increasing on (-∞, -1) and (0, 2)
◦ increasing on  (-∞, 2),  and decreasing on (2, ∞)
◦ decreasing on (-∞,  -1), and increasing on (-1, ∞)
◦ increasing on (-1, 0)  and (2, ∞), and decreasing on (-∞, -1) and (0, 2)
