Several empirical trials have indicated that between 10 and 21 of patients with dissociative identity disorder have abnormal brain activity. Therefore, although abnormal neurological function cannot account for all cases, some dissociative symptoms may result from neurological conditions. Neuroanatomical and neurochemical studies are few and have methodological flaws. When persons with dissociative identity disorder are compared with persons with PTSD, there are few differences in brain anatomy and brain function. In both conditions, chronic stress is present.
