In an experiment on attention described in the textbook, researchers attempted to create visual displays that would put goal-directed selection and stimulus-driven capture into competition. The findings suggest that
◦ the perceptual system of humans is organized so that changes in the environment are automatically ignored.
◦ goal-directed attention is sufficiently powerful to consistently withstand the effects of stimulus-driven attention.
◦ at least in some circumstances, stimulus-driven attention wins out over goal-directed attention.
◦ it is not possible to design a task in which stimulus-driven attention and goal-directed attention compete directly.
