What is the status of the death penalty in the United States?
◦ It was prohibited by the Supreme Court because its implementation was deemed to be cruel and unusual punishment.
◦ In Gregg v. Georgia, it was deemed appropriate in some cases.
◦ It is temporarily on hold while the Supreme Court determines whether it discriminates against minorities.
◦ It was outlawed by Congress during President Barack Obama's first year in office.
