Controversy about the judging in figure skating has been common. One problem is that the panel of judges occasionally provides widely varying scores when judging the same performance. At other times, the scores across judges are consistent, but the scores are inexplicably higher for a skater who clearly made errors compared to a skater whose performance was flawless and equally difficult. Is this a problem related to reliability, validity, both reliability and validity, or neither?
