The 1H NMR spectrum of 1-propanol displays a singlet for the OH proton instead of a triplet. Explain why.
◦ 1-propanol is too small for coupling to occur.
◦ OH does not generate a proton signal due to the highly electronegative nature of oxygen.
◦ 1-propanol molecules rapidly exchange the OH proton, which prevents splitting.
◦ The signal for the OH proton is out of the normal range of the 1H NMR spectrum, meaning that it is not usually visible.
◦ This is typical of all protons bound to oxygen.
