Answer to Question 1

C

Answer to Question 2

The use of mental imagery rehearsal to improve sports performance has a stronger base of empirical support (Taktek, 2004; Vealey & Greenleaf, 2006). For example, Vealey and Greenleaf (2006, p. 312) noted after reviewing the relevant literature that improvements in the following sport skills has been documented through mental practice: basketball shooting, volleyball serving, tennis serving, golf, football placekicking, figure skating, swimming starts, dart throwing, alpine skiing, karate skills, driving, trampoline skills, competitive running, dance, rock climbing, and field hockey performance.. A number of regional cerebral blood flow studies indicate that mental imagery and physical practice involve activation of similar regions of the brain (see Taktek, 2004). The cerebellum, the area of the brain associated with motor movement, in particular appears to participate in the formation of a motor program during mental imagery and in the execution of that program during physical practice (Taktek, 2004, p. 108). Thus, within the brain there appears to be a certain level of equivalence between mental imagery and physical practice of motor skills which could account for improvements in athletic performance through using mental imagery.
