If you want to measure the effects of stress on illness, what would be the independent variable? What would be the dependent variable?

Stress is the independent variable and illness is the dependent variable in this context.

Answer to Question 2

Experimental studies hold extraneous variables constant while manipulating other variables, the so called independent variables. The outcome variables known as the dependent variables are then measured.
