Advertisers should proceed cautiously when contemplating the use of humor. First, the effects of humor can differ due to differences in audience characteristics. Second, the definition of what is funny in one country or region of a country is not necessarily the same in another. Finally, a humorous message may be so distracting to an audience that receivers ignore the message content.
