Answer to Question 1

The word relax comes from the Latin relaxare, meaning to loosen. This is exactly what happens during relaxation. For example, muscles tense up in response to stress, but relaxation breaks the cycle of tension and stress.

Answer to Question 2

Guided imagery has proven helpful in the treatment of many medical problems, including headaches, asthma, and hypertension, and in promoting healing after surgery.
