Answer to Question 1

Answer: Most are young and have incomes under 50,000 per year. Most are highly likely to float large credit card balances rather than paying off such debt in full. Many experience uncontrollable buying binges, make senseless and impulsive purchases, and feel depressed after shopping.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Currently, the working draft of the DSM-5 classifies two types of behavioral addiction as true psychiatric disorders: pathological gambling and hypersexual disorder (commonly called sex addiction). In addition, the working draft includes a proposed diagnosis for a behavioral addiction not otherwise specified that psychiatrists could use for patients with behaviors such as compulsive shopping, texting, and Internet use.
