Answer to Question 1

Balkanization means fragmentation into ethnically based, contentious political units and took its name from recurrent geopolitical fracturing that took place in Balkan Peninsula. The violence-ridden disintegration of the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s was the most profound political development in post-Soviet Eastern Europe. Yugoslavia was carved into six countries. Historic rivalries gave way to outright war between some ethnic groups. In the late 1990s NATO and the United Nations deployed military and diplomatic assets to prevent further balkanization of the countries. Kosovo declared its in- dependence in 2008, but it is not recognized by Russia and some other countries.
