In general, the nasopharyngeal airway is indicated when placement of an oropharyngeal airway is not possible.

When properly inserted, the tip of an oropharyngeal airway lies at the base of the tongue above the epiglottis, with its flange portion extending outside the teeth. Only in this position can the device properly maintain airway patency.
