Answer to Question 1

 An element is essential if the plant cannot complete its life cycle (forming viable
seeds) in the absence of that element.
 An element is essential if it forms part of any molecule or constituent of the plant that
itself is essential in the plant; for example, magnesium is an integral part of chlorophyll.

Answer to Question 2

 Avoid carbon dioxide buildup
 Provide oxygen
