Answer to Question 1

The N/G tube would have been placed in the OR to low intermittent suction for the purpose of preventing a build-up of secretions in the stomach post-op, thus preventing aspiration. This would also prevent a build-up of stomach acid and reduce the chances of a stress ulcer.

Answer to Question 2

CO2 is elevated, indicating acidosis. HCO3- is elevated to compensate. The result is a pH that is just inside the normal limits on the acidic end.
