Answer to Question 1

Answer: The most common motive behind traditionally burglary is economic gain and a need for fast cash. Burglars frequently use burglary to fuel their party lifestyles.

However, some burglars commit burglary as a sexual outlet. They may steal specific items as an outlet for sexual gratification rather than for their material value, or they may simply use burglary as a way to look around the house but not actually take anything. For these offenders, burglary may serve as a precursor to more serious offenses (such as rape or sexually motivated homicide) and may constitute part of a pattern of sexual offending.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Identity theft involves the misuse of another individuals personal information, such as birth dates, addresses, Social Security numbers, and credit card information to commit fraud.

There are two main categories of identity theft. Existing account fraud occurs when an offender obtains information involving open accounts owned by the victim, such as credit, banking, or brokerage accounts. This is the most common type of identity theft, but is typically less costly. New account fraud occurs when an offender uses the victims personal information such as Social Security numbers, birth dates, and home addresses to open new accounts in the victims name, make charges indiscriminately, and then disappear. They may also use stolen personal information to obtain government, medical, or other benefits to which the criminal is not legally entitled. New account fraud is less common but imposes much greater costs and hardships on victims.
