Oxygen does not affect the base formula. One hydrogen is subtracted for each nitrogen, so the base formula for caffeine is C8H6 . A saturated 8 carbon compound should have 18 hydrogens, so the number of degrees of unsaturation for caffeine is: (18  6) / 2 = 6
