In a study by Benson and colleagues (1976), a completed graduate school application was left in a phone booth. Researchers varied the race, level of attraction, and gender of the candidate and examined the influence of these factors on the likelihood of mailing the application. They found that:
◦ males were more likely to mail female applications.
◦ females were more likely to mail male applications.
◦ people were more likely to mail applications of attractive candidates.
◦ males were more likely to mail female applications and people were more likely to mail applications of attractive candidates.
