- Makes some people afraid of being hurt
- Makes some people afraid of being controlled
- Makes some people afraid of losing their freedom
- Makes some people afraid of losing their own identity
- There was not enough sensitive responding as a child, resulting in an avoidant or ambivalent attachment style
- Makes some people afraid they might need to make too many sacrifices
- Puts a person outside their comfort zone: one's own fears about what it means to be intimate
