- Illusion of invulnerability: group members think nothing can happen to them; people believe they won't be held accountable for their actions
- Rationalization: Group members ignore information that contradicts their beliefs; some group members protect the group against outside ideas
- Stereotyped view of the enemy: People outside the group are thought to be stupid, uninformed, weak, or malicious/evil; thinking that those outside the group are bad makes you feel good
- Conformity pressures: There is pressure to agree; people are punished if they bring up dissenting points of view or contradictory evidence
- Illusion of unanimity: The group believes that everyone agrees because no-one brings up a dissenting point of view; people tend to remain silent if they disagree because they want to belong
