Answer to Question 1

The three dimensions of love are passion, intimacy, and commitment. Examples will
vary. At the beginning of a relationship, liking, infatuation, and romantic love are
probably common, whereas empty love, companionate love, and consummate love
take time to develop. Students must specify whether each example does or does not
have passion, does or does not have intimacy, and does or does not have commitment.

Answer to Question 2

Answers will vary. Female friendships are more self-disclosing and more emotional,
and females spend a great deal of time just talking. Male friendships are about
sharing activities and interests. Intimacy is peripheral to these activities. Females are
looking for an attentive and sympathetic ear from their friends, whereas males expect
practical advice. Cross-sex friendships are particularly difficult because of the
different needs and expectations of the two friends. In addition, sexual boundaries
may be an issue.
