Answer to Question 1

Vygotsky called the ZPD the gap between what children are capable of doing now and what they could do with help from others. Adults or older children can best guide children through this zone by gearing their assistance to children's capabilities. Key forms of children's' cognitive activities develop through interaction with older, more experienced individuals who teach and guide them. Studies by Alison Clarke-Stewart and Robert Beck showed that 5-year-olds who watched a videotaped segment with their mothers and whose mothers focused the children's attention on the tape and asked their children to talk about it, were better able to discuss the feelings of the characters than children whose mothers did not uses such scaffolding strategies.
