Answer to Question 2

Dyslexia is a reading disorder characterized by letter reversals, slow reading, and
reduced comprehension. It is estimated that 5 to 17.5 of American children have
dyslexia. In childhood, the focus is on remediation, such as learning how to identity
word pairs that rhyme. In later life, the focus is on accommodation, such as giving
students extra time to do the reading necessary to complete exams. Dyslexia has been
found to have a basis in heredity. Also, neurological problems have been implicated,
such as poor circulation in the left hemisphere of the brain and problems of the angular
gyrus in translating visual information into auditory information. It appears that dyslexic
children have problems in both phonological processing and naming speed.
