2. Typically, Greek temples were placed on an elevated site above the city, and the Acropolis was considered the center of civic life.
3. Dedicated to Athena Parthenos, the goddess of wisdom and the city's namesake, the Parthenon housed an enormous ivory and gold statue of the goddess by Phidias, who was also responsible for the ornamentation and sculpture of the entire building.
4. The friezes are carved in a naturalistic style in which figures are in relaxed poses and are often clothed in clinging drapery that reveals the body.
