Answer to Question 1

1 . A disk protrusion occurs when compression force is applied to the anterior part of the disk during flexion of the spine, and the nucleus is forced posteriorly against the weakened annulus, and part of the nucleus is forced into the spinal canal through a weak area or tear in the annulus. Usually this occurs in the lumbosacral region as a result of heavy lifting. This is sometimes called slipped disk. 2 . Symptoms include acute back pain and/or pain in the leg or thigh on the side of the protrusion. 3 . Treatment includes bed rest and measures to minimize pain and disability, such as the administration of pain medication, such as aspirin, local applications of heat, the use of muscle-relaxing drugs to relieve spasms. Sometimes surgical removal of the protruded disk may be required.
