Both full-term and pre-term infants have only limited iron reserves for the first few months of life but will requires iron supplementation for hematopoiesis. Breast milk contains very little iron although readily absorbed by the body. If iron is not supplemented through dietary intake, the infant's iron reserves can be depleted.
