Answer: MPN represents an excessive proliferation of hematopoietic dividing cells, whereas MDS represents disorders associated with abnormal production. Differentiating MDS and MPN begins with the peripheral blood smear. Signs of abnormal production and maturation are evident in the peripheral blood and the bone marrow in MDS. MPN has an increase in one or more of the blood cell lines.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Primary polycythemia is caused by a mutation in the pluripotential stem cell that causes a panmyelosis in the bone marrow. The cells spill over into the peripheral
blood. Secondary polycythemia results from tissue hypoxia or inappropriate EPO increase, and the bone marrow shows transient hyperplasia.
