Answer to Question 1

An external fixation device is a procedure used to stabilize a fractured bone in which wires, pins, or screws are placed through the soft tissue into the bone and then are held in place with an external device. This is done without surgical correction of the bone.

An internal fixation device is a procedure used to stabilize a fractured bone using wires, pins, or screws. This procedure sometimes is referred to as an open reduction internal fixation. This is done surgically.
