Acknowledging the student's feelings and encouraging her to talk about her feelings will likely help her to feel better about herself. She may not be comfortable with talking about her feelings with her parents at this point, and the nurse discussing this topic with the student is acceptable. Telling her that everyone goes through it and that it will get easier does not address the student's feelings and is nontherapeutic communication.
