Sanctions are positive or negative reinforcements that are used to encourage or discourage different types of behavior. Sanctions are used to promote conformity within a society. They may be positive or negative, and formal or informal. Formal sanctions are enacted by particular persons of some authority; informal sanctions may be enacted by most members of society. Examples: positive/informal sanction  a smile; negative/informal  a boo or insult; positive/formal  a good grade; negative/formal  a speeding ticket.
