Answer to Question 1

The medicalization of society refers to a process of transforming something that was not previously considered medical into a medical matter. Nothing about these human conditions or behaviors are inherently medical matters but after a time we begin to view them as medical conditions, by their very nature. Symbolic interactionists would consider medicalization as a view of life to be confined to a specific historical period; functionalists would stress how medicalization is beneficial to the medical establishment and also provide individuals someone to listen to their problems and sometimes help them. Conflict sociologists, on the other hand, would argue that this process is yet another indication of the growing power of the medical establishment as the more that physicians can turn human affairs into medical conditions, the greater their power and profits.

Answer to Question 2

The original meaning of propaganda was positive. It referred to a committee of cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church whose assignment was the care of foreign missions...to propagate or multiply the spread of the faith.
