Answer to Question 1

Members of the National Women's Party organized in 1916 and picketed the White House for the right to vote in 1917. After six months, the women were arrested and physically abused in jail. Their initial effort to gain suffrage failed, but by 1920 a second effort was successful.

Answer to Question 2

The United States, a capitalist economy, has adopted many socialistic practices in which the government extracts money from some people to pay for benefits to other people. These practices include unemployment compensation; subsidized housing; welfare; a minimum wage, and Social Security. Meanwhile, some socialist countries have begun to endorse certain capitalistic practices, allowing the private ownership of some goods and encouraging the pursuit of profit. China, a socialist country, has allowed the use of credit cards, approved a stock market, and pushed multinationals to deliver breakthrough technologies and train Chinese workers to administer them.
