Many Americans seldom come into contact with a Native American. About one-half of all Native Americans live in rural areas and one-third live in just three states: Oklahoma, Arizona, and California. There are less than 3 million Native Americans left in the U.S., representing less than 1 percent of the overall population. This leaves only 1.5 million Native Americans spread over 47 states.
