Answer to Question 1

A reflex is an unlearned, automatic response to some stimulus. Young infants demonstrate a variety of reflexes. Rooting reflex: touch a newborn on the cheek, it will turn its head in that direction. Palmar grasp: place something in the palm of an infant's hand, it will curl its fingers around it. Babinski reflex: stroking the sole of the foot will result in the toes curling and fanning out. Sucking reflex: the infant will vigorously suck on objects placed in its mouth. Moro reflex: if exposed to a loud noise, or when its head falls backward, an infant will arch its back, throw its arms out to the side and then bring them together. Eyeblink reflex: reflexive blinking that helps protect the baby from bright light or foreign objects.
