Answer to Question 1

In a multiple baseline, the intervention is applied to similar behaviors of the individual. After the baseline is established, treatment for behavior 1 is started and the baseline is continued for behaviors 2 and 3 . When treatment for behavior 2 is started, treatment for behavior 1 and the baseline for behavior 3 are continued. Finally, treatment for behavior 3 is instituted. It is expected that each behavior will change in the desired direction at the point at which treatment is begun. More than one subject might be included in a multiple baseline design.

Although the Roman numeral for the number 4 has always been taught to have been "IV," according to historians, the ancient Romans probably used "IIII" most of the time. This is partially backed up by the fact that early grandfather clocks displayed IIII for the number 4 instead of IV. Early clockmakers apparently thought that the IIII balanced out the VIII (used for the number 8) on the clock face and that it just looked better.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
