Answer to Question 1

UML-style E-R diagrams use an x..y cardinality format., where x is the minimum cardinality and y is the maximum cardinality. An asterisk () is used to represent an unlimited number. Thus, 0..1 means the entity has optional participation with a maximum of one, and 1.. means that the entity has mandatory participation with an unlimited maximum.
