Answer to Question 1

A
Functional nursing divides the nursing work into functional duties. These duties are then assigned to each of the team members. In this model, care can be delivered to a large number of patients. The system utilizes other types of less skilled workers. Patients are likely to have care delivered to them in one shift by several staff members. Some patients may feel that the care they receive is disjointed.

Answer to Question 2

B
Initiating nurse outcomes leads to comparisons for benchmarking best practice in the future and linking RN staffing perception to patient outcomes. Actual staffing compared to recommended staffing should be tracked. This will give a clue to other staffing issues. Medication errors is another measure that has been linked with NHPPD. When resources are scarce, data are imperative to drive needed change. The outcomes of ineffective staffing patterns and nursing care can be devastating to patients, staff, and the organization.
