Answer to Question 1

2
Explanation: 1. Accrediting agencies such as the Joint Commission and other agencies such as Medicare
require organizations to assess nurses competencies during the orientation process and
annually. Skills week offers an opportunity for nurses to develop and enhance skills they may
not have the opportunity to perform. Nursing administration does require some sort of annual
skill competency because the organization is required to do so. Assessing skill competency of
other nurses does provide managers with information regarding their staff and allows for a
plan of action if the staff is lacking in a particular skill.

Answer to Question 2

1,2
Rationale 1: The nurse's plan must be flexible to account for the rapidity of change in today's health care environment.
Rationale 2: The plan developed as a young nurse should be long term. The desires of the far distant future must be planned for today.
Rationale 3: The nurse should be open-minded about the career path but should point the path toward the eventual goal. For example, the nurse may wish to be the nurse executive of the hospital but may eventually end up a nurse executive in a health care conglomerate.
Rationale 4: Mentors often come and go through a nurse's career. The current mentor may change to a different one as years go by.
Rationale 5: The nurse may find that early retirement is possible and desirable, or may choose to work long past the date considered when younger.
