Answer to Question 1

Answer: 1
Rationale: In total patient care, one nurse cares for a client, and can give continuous, holistic and expert nursing care, being totally accountable for the client. Team nursing, functional nursing, and modular nursing have the disadvantage of less continuity of care, as many caregivers at different levels are involved in client care. Some of these might mean less skilled personnel caring for the client in an intensive care unit.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: 2
Rationale: The nurse manager who empowers staff gives them power to do what needs to be done. Thus, the nurses working to find ways to control the cost of unit supplies are the best example of empowerment. The nurse manager who allows the charge nurse to work on the schedule is not empowering the nurse to do something on her own. Using incentives is not empowerment, as it coerces behavior from individuals. Meeting expectations is not empowerment in and of itself. If the nurses mentored new staff starting on the unit because they felt empowered to make the unit a better place, this would be the best example of empowering staff.
