What is an executive order and why would a president use one?

What will be an ideal response?

Question 2

Figure 8.1 presents a timeline of the nonviolent civil rights movement, beginning with Brown in 1954 and ending with the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., in 1968 .

Do you think the nonviolent approach accelerated the achievement of civil rights? Or would a more aggressive approach have gotten legislation passed more quickly (or more legislation passed)? Cite at least three specific examples using the events on the timeline.

What will be an ideal response?

Answer to Question 1

An ideal response will:
1, Describe an executive order as a command by the president that has the force of law. They do not need Congress's approval and do not involve foreign government (as executive agreements do).
2, Describe instances when an executive order would be used. For instance, it could be used to require that a company providing goods and services to the government follow certain hiring practices. It was used by President George W. Bush to allow religious institutions to compete for federal funding.
3, Include details about the limitations of an executive order. The Supreme Court can find an executive order unconstitutional. Congress can cut off funding to weaken the order. Future presidents can overturn previous executive orders.

Answer to Question 2

An ideal response will:
1, Argue for either the nonviolent approach or a more aggressive approach.
2, Provide at least three events from the timeline as examples to illustrate the argument.
