Answer to Question 1
Choose topic. Write about the topic - focus on ideas rather than mechanics. Read the quickwrite - to prepare for sharing. Write a second time - on same topic or new topic that emerged; optional. 5-10 minutes; informal; helps children focus on generating ideas and developing writing fluency. Practical application will vary by student, topic, and grade level selected.
Answer to Question 2
Students dictate words/sentences about a shared or common experience; teacher writes dictation on chart; text is used for reading instruction; familiarity with text leads to more successful reading; print concepts introduced and reinforced (directionality, concept of word, etc.). Minimal editing so children don't get message that their language is inferior or inadequate; children will reread text the way they dictated it, may be confused when words don't match.
