Answer to Question 1

ANS: C
An appropriate intervention and one considered an essential part of primary care for older adults, is to simply ask the question: Do you feel you have a hearing loss? This question has been shown to have reasonable sensitivity and specificity for hearing impairment. The vol-ume of the television and the response to a ringing telephone can be affected by variables other than hearing loss. The question regarding glasses and a hearing aide can be perceived as insensitive.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
An example of communication that conveys ageist attitudes is ignoring the older person and talking to family and friends as if the person is not present. This is likely to convey feelings to the client that they are not important enough to include in the conversation. Some features of elder-speak (speaking more slowly, repeating, or paraphrasing) may be beneficial in communication with older people with dementia
